Overall: a spirited & strong performance, and well received. For me, yesterday’s performance had greater focus, integrity & strength in the centre.
Astonishing & surprising errors. Met with shrugs, laughs & smiles. The Crimson Shrug is a well-established part of band life. This is not an ensemble that honours accuracy over delivery. There are many technical reasons why walking the trapeze with a pal, with at least one of them wearing a blindfold, might fall off. But this is not the night to relate pitches from the high wire, nor dwell on them overmuch.
A first: Gavin included a famous drum solo from The Shaggs in his own solo to Indiscipline. This was in response to a bet Ade laid down yesterday: a free dinner for Gavin if the English Drummer played the solo. Ade is paying.
Returning to the hotel room. My focus on this tour, and particularly our visit to NYC, has been closer than on any. I have not walked further than a block around the hotel from Loew’s Midtown Motor Inn, nor deviated from the straightest route to the venue. This is a city where, for me, a lowered guard & a business opportunity strikes; an old friendship from the origins of time is rekindled in my aching ear for an hour or so – I know you’re being quiet but knew you’d really want to see me! Many stories are waiting to be told & Fripp seems to be the one who needs to hear them. Photograph & autograph opportunities are also available without measure, and who cares if Fripp cares? In every city there are two or three people I would love to meet, but if I take a step towards them I am pounced upon; and they leave before I can find them.
Should any innocent protest that this in more imaginative whining from that ingrate Englishman, examples ad infinitum might be presented. But this also is not the time to relate them, even if they required further relating. In any case, they only need relating to those who know none of this applies to them because Fripp would love to meet them, give autographs & have photographs taken with his good friends of new acquaintance, and / or discuss – in detail - the business opportunities that are readily available, even those already declined repeatedly over a period of years.
